Photographs

This collection is comprised of photographs of students and faculty at the School of Art and Art History, now the School of Art, Design and Art History, from circa 1970 to 2000.

The School of Music Scrapbooks, 1915-1999 (bulk 1969-1999), consist of 18 scrapbooks and loose ephemera. These scrapbooks predominantly chronicle the events of the Madison College Chorale between 1969 and 1997 under the direction of David A. Watkins, with other scrapbooks including one for the Women’s Concert Choir under the direction of Sally M. Lance and another for the Madison College Glee Club under the direction of Edna T. Shaeffer.

The Sheetz and Dellinger Family Papers, 1870s-1950s, comprises 92 photographs, two Edinburg High School diplomas, an assortment of school report cards and other papers, and various miscellaneous materials pertaining to James S. Sheetz, Frances Dellinger Sheetz, and their family and friends.

The Small Business Development Center Records documents the creation and growth of the Shenandoah Valley Small Business Development Center. The collection comprises of financial budgets, proposals, donations, outreach programs, and articles that cover the growing success of the Shenandoah Valley SBDC at James Madison University.

The Snyder Family Papers, ca. 1850-1901, comprise two account books and photographs documenting the John Snyder family of Augusta County, Virginia.

The Stephens and Yount Family Papers, 1812-1995, primarily document the Richard Stephens family of Rockingham County, Virginia and his descendants. Materials include correspondence, receipts, financial documents, indentures, deeds, photographs, and ephemera.

The Stratford Players Records is comprised of record books, scrapbooks, correspondence, photographs, newspaper clippings, rehearsal scripts, programs and playbills, and copies of yearbook pages, documenting the activities of the Stratford Players (formerly known as the Stratford Literary Society and the Stratford Dramatic Club), from 1914-1983.

The Thomas H. Arthur Papers, 1953-2018, consist of eight boxes (2.42 cubic feet) of personal correspondence, manuscripts, theater programs, photographs, and notes written by Dr. Thomas H. Arthur, JMU faculty member, and pertaining to actor Melvyn Douglas.

The Tresa F. Quarles Papers, 1952-2008, comprise two scrapbooks containing captioned photographs, correspondence, and ephemera documenting Quarles' time as a student at Madison College and as an alumni. The collection also includes loose photographs, newspaper clippings, a selection of Quarles's report cards from Madison College, and her class beanie. Also included are six typed reminiscences written by Quarles in which she recalls highlights from her time at Madison College.

The Turner Ashby Letters consist of 28 letters, a petition, and two portrait photographs of Turner Ashby.

This collection consists of photographs, memos, letters, pamphlets, maps, and other materials dating from 1917-1994 that relate to the George Washington National Forest, Dry River District. Most of the materials concern fire-fighting activities within the Forest, while others relate to the activities of the Civilian Conservation Corps and recreation within national forest lands.

The V. Inez Graybeal Roop Papers, 1913-2005, a collection of a notable Harrisonburg Teacher’s College (now James Madison University) alumna, contains James Madison University related correspondence, speeches, news clippings, photographs, scrapbooks, and reunion programs, as well as Roop and Graybeal family history.

This collection contains the administrative and organizational records and scrapbooks of the Valley of Virginia Branch of the National League of American Pen Women. Materials related to procedural policies and bylaws, branch meeting minutes, newsletters, exhibitions and contests, branch members, photographs, and community women in the arts are included.

The Velma Hilda Davis Woodring Scrapbook 1924-1926, comprises captioned black-and-white photographs documenting Woodring's (née Davis) time as a student at the State Teachers College at Harrisonburg.

The Virginia Wilderness Committee Records, 1961-2009, comprise official records - administrative and financial records, newsletters, project and subject files - documenting the organization's activities and projects related to wilderness legislation, preservation, and protection in Virginia's national forests and other wild areas.

This collection contains correspondence, reports, photographs, business documents, financial statements, publications, and other documents that relate to the businesses of Charles Wampler Sr. (Wampler Feed and Seed Company) primarily and to a lesser degree his son, Charles Wampler Jr. (Wampler Food Incorporated). Correspondence comprises the bulk of the collection.

Contains 36 B&W photographs of loggers (including African-American and child workers) cutting trees in North Carolina, Virginia, and unspecified locations. Some photos have hand-written or stamped information on the back explaining the techniques being used and identifying them as "West Virginia Pulp and Paper Co."

The William Hoyle Garber Photographs, 1930-1960, comprise approximately 1625 negatives and 70 prints that were taken and developed by William Garber of Garber’s Photo Shop in Mount Jackson, Virginia. The photographs document the people, places, industries, automobiles, sports, events, disasters, etc., of the central and northern Shenandoah Valley (primarily between the cities of Harrisonburg and Woodstock).

This collection, consisting of 37.13 cubic feet (113 boxes), contains the professional and academic papers of Dr. William Ingham, professor emeritus of physics at James Madison University.

The Wine Family Papers, 1885-2001, document three generations of the Wine family from Shenandoah County, Virginia. Their participation in civic engagement and community activities is documented through Sunday school minute books, ledgers, and diaries. The collection also comprises photographs, scrapbooks, postcards, and school materials documenting aspects of daily life.

The Women's Club Records are comprised of newsletters, yearbooks, directories, papers, scrapbooks, media files and photographs that document the activities of the James Madison University's Woman’s Club, from 1977-2013.
