FOLK. Folklore and folkways

Barbara Wright Oral Histories of Virginia and West Virginia Folkways, 1994-1996, is comprised of 13 interviews with individuals who recall life in the Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia and West Virginia prior to the establishment of the Shenandoah National Park, as well as Wright’s research materials regarding the CCC in Augusta County, photographs, and research notes on the town of Stokesville, Virginia.

The Elmer Lewis Smith Papers, 20th century, consist of six folders of notes and drafts, compiled and written by Elmer Lewis Smith, on folk superstitions, ghosts, conjuring, powwowing, folk healing, and holiday superstitions in the Shenandoah Valley.

Research materials and topical files pertaining to Shenandoah Valley folk culture including recipes, cures for ailments, folklore stories, and other traditions gathered and documented by John G. Stewart and Elmer Smith, former professors at Madison College (James Madison University).

The John L. Heatwole Collection of Shenandoah Valley History, 1802-1901, consists of three folders containing 102 items pertaining to Shenandoah Valley history. The collection is arranged topically into three folders: General Valley Documents, Page County Documents, and Recipes.

John L. Heatwole Personal Papers, 1973-1995, consists of one Hollinger box and one flat box of items such as correspondence, exhibit notices, consignment contracts, magazine articles, photos, and sketches relevant to Heatwole's work as an artist and lecturer.

The Shenandoah National Park Oral Histories, SdArch SNP, 1964-1999, consists of audio, transcripts, and images pertaining to interviews conducted primarily by Dorothy Noble Smith in addition to members of the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club, park collaborators Eugene and Diane Zior Wilhelm, Darwin Lambert, and others.
